Introduction 简介

Starting from a building shaped like an ocean liner, this walk meanders north through the leafy former French Concession and ends at a 1,700-year-old temple. It strings together Shanghai's most elegant Citywalk streets — Wukang, Anfu, Changle, and Changshu — and finishes at Jing'an Temple, compressing nearly two millennia of city history into a single afternoon stroll.

Built in 1924 on a 30-degree wedge of land where Huaihai Middle Road meets Wukang Road, the building was designed by Hungarian architect László Hudec for the International Savings Society. It was Shanghai's first apartment building with continuous balconies. The original name, Normandie Apartments, came from the developer's habit of naming its Shanghai properties after French regions — Normandy being a peninsula in northwestern France.

Hudec turned the awkward acute angle into the building's signature: a triangular footprint resembling an ocean liner cutting through waves, with two recessed openings on the north side for ventilation and light. An English-language press notice from the time of its opening called it "the Flatiron comes to Shanghai," likening it to the famous New York landmark.

After 1949 it became home to a remarkable cast: film stars Zhao Dan, Sun Daolin, Wang Wenjuan, director Zheng Junli, and actress Wang Renmei all lived here. Sun Daolin's apartment had previously belonged to Kong Lingkan — the famous "Miss Kong" — daughter of Nationalist finance minister H.H. Kung. Wang Renmei filmed Children of Troubled Times while living here, and the song that became China's national anthem, "March of the Volunteers," was first performed full-throated inside this building.

Ferguson Lane

376–378 Wukang Road

Walk about 500 meters north from Wukang Mansion and look left for a discreet gate with the words "Ferguson Lane" — this is Wukangting. The English name comes from Wukang Road's original name, Route Ferguson, after John C. Ferguson, an American missionary and educator. The road itself was built in 1907 and runs 1,183 meters.

The charm of Ferguson Lane is that it hides. Tucked deep inside a leafy Wukang Road lane, you have to walk through the gate and around a French-style red-brick mansion before the courtyard reveals itself. The red-brick building at No. 376, built in 1928, was once the residence of Guo Taiqi, a former Chinese ambassador to Britain — a three-story neoclassical garden house with exposed red-brick walls.
